Ha Ha Tonka
“Race To The Bottom”

Colorful Kids.

This band rips if you don’t know them. They have played Lollapalooza, a bunch of SXSW festivals and have toured all over the world. They are also buddies of ADB so this was a lot of fun to put together. The concept was simple. We have seen them play at least 10 shows and we knew that each dude in the band is a fantastic musician and entertainer. They also harmonize quite often, so we wanted to highlight each member of the band individually, but then put them together to showcase how well they gel as a band.

After they sent us the album we took notice of the color palette and used it as inspiration. We found reams of photo paper in the same colors, and essentially filmed each band member on two different colors performing the song. We changed the position of the band members while we changed position of the camera and ran through the song with each band member four times or so. This allowed each member to have enough angles to create an edit with them alone, which guaranteed that every frame of the video would be unique. We took this to another level by having the camera on a dolly the entire time so when we cut back to an angle we already used, the camera would be moving in a different direction from the previous use. All in all, it was a fun art project for our friends at Bloodshot Records and always a great hang with the Ha Ha Tonka dudes.
